Mastering basic phrases is a great way to exhibit conversational fluency. Once you’ve learned the basics, phrases can work as a great segue into a deeper conversation. Here are Fr. Philip Johnson’s most common French phrases:

Basic phrases can be a great way to continue the conversation.  When you first begin to learn the French language, it can be tricky to know what to say next after “Bonjour” / “Hello.”  French Translator, Fr.   • Bonjour — ‘Hello’
  • Bou matin — ‘Good morning’
  • Bon apres-midi — ‘Good afternoon’
  • Bonsoir — ‘Good evening’ 
  • Salut — ‘Hi’
  • Coucou — ‘Hey’

Expressions of Gratitude

So, you’ve got greetings down.  Now continuing the conversation is another story!  Before getting into more complicated detail-driven idioms, it’s important to start with the basics.  Basic French phrases to consider beyond “Good morning” and “Good night” include:

  • S’il vous plait — ‘Please’
  • Merci — ‘Thank you’
  • Merci beaucoup — ‘Thank you very much’
  • De rien — ‘It’s nothing’ (Don’t mention it)
  • Pourriez-vous M’aider? — ‘Can you help me?’
  • J’ai besoin de votre aide — ‘I need your help.’
  • Merci pour votre aide — ‘Thanks for your help.’
